Salford’s Ukrainians have offered thanks to the support shown by the city in response to the ongoing conflict.
Developments in the Ukraine war have been made in the past days, large streams of missiles from Russia have struck several major cities.
Ukrainian, Alex Romanov, said: “I want to say thank you to the whole of the UK community, to all the people in this lovely country for your support to my fellow citizenships.”
Mr Romanov moved to Salford from Ukraine in 2015 and wants to share his gratitude and how ‘happy’ he is to be apart of such a ‘great community’.
He encourages the need for a strong support system for Ukrainian refugees in Salford.
“I see how big the support is to all those refugees who have just recently came to Manchester. It is just amazing to see Ukrainian flags all around,” he added.
“People are willing to help, I see it from all the groups on social medias. It is just amazing.”
As a community, Salford has made efforts to support Ukraine in a number of ways. City Mayor, Paul Dennett arranged for the Ukrainian flag to be raised the Ukrainian flag in support in March at the Civic Centre. Salfordians have also opened their homes and groups have been set up in support.
Alex talks about one group, the Ukrainian Cultural Centre. He said: “When the war started, we visited them and handed over all the stuff we can send to those in need in Ukraine.” He knows how they have helped the refugees incredibly.
With 83 missiles launched and 43 shot down by the Ukraine air force, Alex is confident that Ukraine will still win this war.
“Everyone is even more determined to fight. I see how brave our army is. How desperate people are to win this war. Now everyone understands this war is not only between Russia and Ukraine. If Putin is not stopped now, he will move further and further. It is our common goal to stop him now.”
