A private health clinic is expecting longer NHS waiting times to boost demand for its courses for patients suffering with chronic back pain.

Bode Clinic, on New Bailey Street, is trialing courses for 45-65-year-olds as a way to encourage a better quality of life, and improve confidence.

The six-week programme, beginning on October 10, practises non-equipment movements with trained physiotherapists, teaching participants how to move safely and effectively.

The course costs £10 per session, with attendees welcome to come to as many classes as they see necessary.

Clinic director Kristin Wika Paulsen said: “We wanted to create an educational class for people suffering with lower back pain, to teach people how to better manage it. At the same time, we can hopefully stop any fear or lack of movement – by breaking the myths around movement, people can hopefully learn to become a little more active.”

According to the charity, VersusArthritis, up to 20.3 million people suffer with a musculoskeletal disorder or chronic back pain in the UK.

Over 45s are thought to be the most at risk of developing back-related conditions.

Despite the volume, Paulsen believes the NHS is not doing enough to support those suffering. She said: “The problem with these classes is there aren’t many of them on the NHS. They normally run for 6-12 weeks, so once you get a go, you’re back on the waiting list.

“They aren’t advertised. So, unless you ask, or you have a very proactive GP, you don’t really get to hear about it.

“The reason I started the clinic was to make these classes more available. There’s a lot of shortages in the NHS and I think we can do something better. You don’t have to just accept that you’re on your own, there are things we can do to help you.”
