The cast of a new musical took to Salford Quays to sing their shanty songs ahead of taking the Salford stage.
Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is inspired by the true story of the chart-topping group of Cornish fishermen.
Set to come to the Lowry 27th September -1st October, the musical is based on the original novel written by Amanda Whittington, as well as the 2019 film of the same name, Fisherman’s Friends.
The cast gave Salfordian’s a preview performance as they sang their traditional fishermen working songs in style, on a canal cruising Salford Quays.
The musical’s song list on the quays featured sea shanties made famous by the group, including “Sweet Maid of Madeira” and “Nelson’s Blood”.
Parisa Shahmir, who performs the role of Alwyn, said: “The show is about a group of shanty singing fishermen and their journey to greatness.”
“The show has been perceived really well, it’s such a feel-good story, there’s so much heart, there’s so much soul, so much joy, the music is incredible, and it’s so great to get to share that and to see it resonate with other people.”
Anton Stephens, who plays Leadville, said: “It’s wonderful to watch something evolve, and at the same time keep the essence of it as well the richness of these sea shanties.
“I’ve spent my life on stages, stadiums and arenas and have not seen the kind of response in the theatre that we’re getting every single night, standing ovations and people singing along.”
The production runs until October 1st at the Lowry, with ticket prices ranging from £19 to £33 upwards.
