Red Devils Women's

Salford Red Devils are one game away from making history following their decisive victory against Hull KR.

Until this year, Salford Red Devils had never had a women’s rugby team and they are now one game away from a debut season treble.

The Red Devils will face Oulton Raidettes on Sunday October 2 in the Championship Grand Final.

Oulton are the only side to beat Salford this season, but the Red Devils got revenge in the reverse fixture later in the season.

Red Devils second row Helena Walker was optimistic as she looked towards the historic match:

She said: “I’m quietly confident. I think we need to be sensible, they’re the only team to beat us this season.

“We need to think about how we managed to beat them after that by playing our game and not falling into theirs.”

Walker believes the squad’s character will be a key to success, as they proved in the semi-final after falling behind.

“It’s happened a lot with us when we let them go first, but then we get our heads in the game and don’t let them get involved.”

Red Devils captain Louise Fillingham spoke about how the team is preparing for Oulton on Sunday.

“You’ve seen the training ground; it’s about loosening up. I’ve already been in with the physio”, she said.

“It’s about keeping our bodies moving this week. We’ll ramp it up a bit as the week goes on, but obviously it’s about making sure our bodies are ready for Sunday.”

Assistant coach Dawn Schofield

Assistant coach Dawn Schofield, who has played rugby her entire life, didn’t shy away from the impact the squad is having.

“It’s a massive achievement, this didn’t exist when I played”, she said.

“I was one of a kind, probably one of the only girls from Salford who played Rugby. We are now essentially building an entire generation of women rugby players here in Salford.”

The semi-final against Hull KR on Sunday didn’t get off to a great start, with the Red Devils having to come from behind as their opponents opened the scoring.

However Hull KR missed the subsequent conversion, putting Salford 4-0 down.

The early try conceded proved to be the wake-up call Salford needed as they came back to be leading 12-4 by the halfway mark.

The second 40 continued to be one way traffic as the free-scoring Red Devils came out with a 24-4 victory.

The Red Devils were so impressive, two ‘Player of the Match’ awards were handed out on social media with Louise Fellingham and Demi Jones picking up the accolades.

The Red Devils will face Oulton Raidettes at the Provident Stadium Odsal, Bradford at 3pm this Sunday. You can purchase tickets here.
