Public voting has opened today for the Spirit of Salford Community annual awards.
The Salford Community event, held on March 23rd 2023 at the AJ Bell stadium, is to honour individuals which have helped the local Salford community.
The three overall categories include citizen of the year, community group of the year, public servant of the year. The seven category awards include Spirit of Salford special recognition award, young person of the year, volunteer of the year, good neighbour of the year, best health achievement, best environmental improvement, best community safety project.
Members of the public can nominate anyone within the Salford community.
The nominations opened on August 26th and will still be accepted until December 4th. The public vote closes February 26th, who choose the main three awards. The other winners are selected by a panel of judges.
The funding for the awards comes through private sponsorship and the Salford mayoral team, including the Salford mayor himself Paul Dennett, who has each contributed a portion of their salaries since the awards began in 2019.
The citizen of the year awards is judged on three main points:
“An outstanding commitment to Salford and its people…Work that has made long-lasting improvements to the city or a specific community…Overcoming a personal difficulty or making a stand to improve their life or the lives of others”
Gemma Fish won the ‘Citizen of the Year’ award, last year after setting up a charity to help with delivering shopping, medicines, and dog walking services for people who were forced to isolate due to the COVID- 19 pandemic.
Last year’s judges said: “[she] has made a tremendous difference to the community during the pandemic.
“During the lockdown period Gemma went above and beyond, delivering thousands of leaflets throughout her local area to identify people who needed help”.
The winners will be announced at the AJ Bell stadium on 23rd March 2023.
