BBC Sports Personality of the Year set to be held at Dock10 studios in Media City for the third consecutive year on 21st December.
The event is scheduled for a Wednesday to avoid a clash with the FIFA World Cup final. Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott are also returning to host the 69th edition of the show.
The categories for the award’s will include: BBC Sports Personality of the Year; World Sport Star of the Year; Helen Rollason award; Young Sports Personality of the Year; Unsung Hero; Coach of the Year; Team of the Year; and the Lifetime Achievement award. Favourites for the main award include Leah Williamson and Beth Mead, who both helped lead England’s Lionesses to victory in the Euros this summer. However, if the England men’s side go one step further than last summer, star performers could emerge as late contenders.
BBC’s Director of Sport, Barbara Slater, said: “The BBC is the home of major sporting events and has brought key moments from a huge year to audiences across the UK.
“We will be truly spoiled for choice for contenders and can’t wait to celebrate the year’s achievements in December.”
Emma Raducanu was last year’s runaway winner after her shock US Open victory, but this installment is set to be much more highly contested. This is due to British teams being involved in the upcoming men’s Rugby League World Cup, T20 Cricket World Cup and women’s Rugby Union World
Nominees for the awards will be announced at a later date.
