Salford Choral Society will perform modern and classical favourites in a special concert to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the return to singing after lockdown on Saturday July 2 at St Clement’s Church, Chorlton.
The upbeat programme includes popular songs from musicals such as Somewhere over the Rainbow and Singin’ in the Rain alongside opera choruses, plus music that nods to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, including Jerusalem and Zadok the Priest.
Music Director Tom Newall said: “This is the perfect concert to celebrate the summer of 2022 as we all enjoy the return to normal life after two years of lockdown – as well as the historic milestone of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
“The programme includes some of the choir’s favourite pieces that kept us going during lockdown, when we had to move to singing online. It will be an uplifting and inspiring evening that is suitable for anyone of any age.”
Other pieces to be performed on the night are two uplifting contemporary pieces: Wide Open Spaces (Quartel) and Five Days that Changed the World (Chilcott), which marks historic occasions such as the abolition of slavery. The concert will end with a performance of Benjamin Britten’s arrangement of the National Anthem.
The concert takes place at 7.30pm on Saturday 2 July at St Clement’s Church, Edge Lane, Manchester M21 9AE.
