Salford City Football Club have parted ways with manager Gary Bowyer after just one full season.

The news was announced this afternoon in a club statement which read: “Salford City Football Club announces the departure of First Team Manager Gary Bowyer from The Peninsula Stadium.

“A meeting was held earlier today and the Club has made the decision to terminate Gary Bowyer’s contract along with Assistant Manager Billy Barr.

“The Club would like to thank Gary and Billy for their hard work over the last season, and we wish them all the best for their future roles within football.

“An announcement regarding the role of First Team Manager will be made in due course.”

Bowyer joined the club last March on a short-term deal, replacing Richie Wellens, and was quickly signed to a two year contract After earning 17 points from eight matches in April. However, he has been sacked with a year left on his deal after the club finished 10th in League Two this season, despite having the second largest wage bill in the division.

This will feel all too familiar for Salford’s fans, as they have had four different managers since the 2020/21 campaign. Supporters have criticised owner Gary Neville for not giving Bowyer enough time:

The Reds will be hoping that their next manager can guide them to at least a seventh place finish, as they have failed to reach the playoffs since earning promotion to the Football League in 2019.
