“The medication helps but what is truly keeping me alive are groups like this one” – ‘We Recover’ are helping those with serious side effects from long Covid
A long Covid support group in Salford are actively seeking to help more people suffering from poorly understood Covid effects that have drastically changed lives.
Facilitator of the sessions and admin of the Facebook support forum, Heather Broughton, from Salford Health Improvement, stated: “It’s about people supporting each other and sharing their experiences, but most of all being believed.
“We must get the word out there to get people to understand, because a lot of people ended up either losing their job or going down the disciplinary route as there was a complete lack of understanding.”

“Our young people can turn things around when they have people in their lives that genuinely care, like our mentors so” – Salford Charity aiming to help young people
Charity ‘Pure Insight’ is aiming to help young people in Salford by launching new drop-in sessions at a café in Little Hulton.
Salford Charity Pure Insight is a charity that supports young people that have left the care system. They work with local authorities in Cheshire East, Stockport, Warrington, Trafford and Salford supporting young people aged between 16 and 25.
Team Manager, Kim Steele, who manages three of the areas that Pure Insight looks out for, is one of the many team members and volunteers that help support young people.

Salford Baby Bank issue warning to parents about “dangerous” toys being sold online
Many of us buy our toys for our little ones online, but could the seemingly safe product pose a serious health risk to your child?
On Monday, Salford Baby Bank – a charity dedicated to providing struggling parents with baby supplies – sent out a warning on social media regarding counterfeit toys being sold online this Christmas period.
Counterfeit toys do not meet the UK and EU safety standards and can often be dangerous to children as a result. They can have small parts that are choking hazards, malfunctioning electrical components that can catch fire, and toxic plastics that can cause a child to become ill if ingested.

New drive-through vaccination centre to open in Salford
A new drive-through vaccination centre has opened for Salford residents.
No appointment is needed for the drive-through site located on Winders Way, M6 6AR.
Starting Thursday 16 December, the vaccination site will be open for four days:
- Thursday, December 16, 1-8pm
- Friday, December 17, 10am-3pm
- Saturday, December 18, 10am-3pm
- Sunday, December 19, 10am-3pm

Salford creative arts company to launch nationwide bilingual English x British Sign Language play
Salford based creative arts company Art with Heart’s bilingual play Stan will be touring the UK in February 2022.
The play that is written and produced by Art with Heart, based at Islington Mill, is performed in both English and British Sign Language.
The production revolves around Sam, who is a dinosaur loving 8-year old. Sam’s world changes after his parents separate. He meets Alex, a deaf girl with a vivid imagination and the two adventure to meet Stan, the T-rex at Manchester Museum.
Although the play is primarily aimed at ages 7-11, it is accessible for people of all ages.

Stagecoach set to merge with National Express
Bus company Stagecoach, which runs multiple bus routes through Salford, will be taken over by its closest competitor.
The Scottish company, which runs routes such as the 50 bus from East Disbury to MediaCityUK, and the 34 from Wigan to Manchester Picadilly with stops in Eccles, Worsley and Ordsall, will have its shares dropped to 25%, while National Express will takeover the remaining 75.
The deal is reported to be worth around £437 million and will mean the newly formed merger will have around 70,000 employees and 40,000 vehicles.
Stagecoach is currently the biggest bus and coach operator in Britain.

New ‘Build A Business’ project aims to support small Salford businesses with new innovative coffee mornings
A new project aiming to support small businesses has launched all over Salford and Greater Manchester.
‘Build A Business’ is a new innovative project which is aimed at entrepreneurs across Greater Manchester with a business idea that they would like to develop. The project is also open to smaller businesses that have been registered at Companies House for fewer than 12 months.
Build A Business in GM Libraries is part funded by the european union, with a grant of £1.3 million from ERDF funding, and is managed by Manchester City Council. The project will run until June 2023.

Ex-Salford City players invite FC United to play for charity
FC United football fans faced ex-Salford City players at the Salford Sports village on Friday 10th December to raise money for the FC United food hub.
Joseph Winskill, the kit man at FC United participated in the 11-side match and he is the organiser of the go fund me for the charity which raised over £600.
The players made cash donations as five-pound cash donations were made to play. Local business, Pheonix Flooring Manchester, was also one of the sponsors supporting the cause.

Free events for kids over Christmas in Salford
Salford City Council are hosting free sessions for kids during the Christmas school holidays.
The classes include a free lunch and delivered by brilliant local Salford organisations and community groups across the city of Salford.
These sessions are for children from Reception to Year 11 that are eligible for free school meals.
There will be party fun in East Salford. Sports, games and arts and crafts held in Clifton, Swinton, Little Hulton, Irlam, Eccles, and Cadishead.

“Making anywhere greener is a better thing” – Salfordians react to ‘Greening Swinton Square’ Plan
They want to provide green space, more tree cover to improve the air quality and to enhance the local economy.
Labour councilor Gina Reynolds, who was elected in May this year said: “I think it’s fantastic… The square at the minuet looks very dated, it’s very concrete, and I just think it will be good to green it up, make it more attractive which I think will bring more people into the area.”
Groundwork is currently holding drop-in sessions until March, to collaborate with locals on what they’d like the changes to bring.
Community project leads, Lydia Marsh and Sara Walker said:” we’re looking to implement nature-based solutions into the area to add some life, biodiversity into the area and make it more attractive space to come and shop”

Mind Salford release useful resources amid the changing Covid restrictions
Mind Salford have released tips to help people battle their mental health with changes in Covid restrictions.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us struggled with our mental wellbeing, with the new restrictions and the new variant, many of us are starting to feel the anxiety again.
The Mind Salford branch have released tips for taking care of your mental wellbeing; Keeping in touch with friends, getting natural light exposure, finding ways to pass the time and looking after your physical health.

“It’s important to create an awareness that hasn’t been there before” – Salford Deaf Advocacy Meetings to help the deaf community in Salford
The Salford Deaf Advocacy and Support Service have held meetings to help the deaf community in Salford.
Everyone two months, they host a User Forums Meeting where the deaf community come together to discuss experiences, they have had with health sectors, and feed back to the CCG.
This project started in March 2020 and allows the deaf community to gather in an informal setting.
Salford’s CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group), will make necessary improvements for the deaf community within the NHS, pharmacies, GP appointments, etc.

Salford residents are left “Extremely frustrated” due to the roadworks on the A560
Roadworks in and around Salford have left locals “extremely frustrated”.
The roadworks on the A506 Trafford Road have been taking place since March 2021. The work has now also been extended along The Quays and Ordsall Lane.
The intention behind this roadwork is to provide access to MediaCityUK, Salford Quays, Ordsall and optimise traffic signals for turning traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Although the roadworks are being created to benefit the Salford community the £20 million scheme has inconvenienced many such as students, local residents and business owners.

“We’re quite proud, and grateful to Sky for the collaboration” -AFC Monton to be used as Sky TV show filming location
AFC Monton is to be used as a filming location for the latest series of hit Sky TV show Brassic.
Film crews will spend a week at the local amateur football club while filming season four of the hit Sky TV series.
Club chairman Kieran Rabbitt, said that contact with production companies already existed due to the club having been used previously for ITV drama Scott and Bailey (2011-2016), and was really pleased to receive a call from Sky.
He said: “We’re quite proud, and grateful to Sky for the collaboration.”

Clean Air Zone ordered in Salford and Manchester
The Government has instructed Greater Manchester to introduce a #CleanAirZone to reduce harmful air pollution on local roads.
The Clear Air Zone Financial Support Scheme will help people to either replace or retrofit non-complaint vehicles so that they meet emission standards.
Transport for Greater Manchester said on Twitter: “The zone will be introduced on 30th May 2022, making our city-region safer for everyone.”

The Mancunian mural putting Swinton, and Mr Chips takeaway on the map
One Swinton business sick of the “scruffy graffiti on the side of his chippy”, decided to take matters into their own hands- commissioning a mural from Evan Barlow Art, to put Swinton on the map.
Painted on the side of Mr Chips takeaway, a ‘family run English Fish & Chip Shop’ in Swinton, ‘Evan Barlow Art’ has created a mural to celebrate the heritage of Swinton and Manchester as a whole.
The mural created in collaboration with Evan Barlow Art and Kelzo, two Mancunian artists- pays homage to iconic ‘Manchesterisms’ with a range of recognisable landmarks and small personal references such as: Acme Mill, Salford Lads Club, Oasis, the Manchester bee, and a young girl with her pet bulldog who lives down the same street as Mr Chips’s takeaway.

Salford residents react to national Covid test shortages
Lateral flow tests are currently unavailable on the government website after new advice was released from the government on what double jabbed people in England should do if they’ve been in contacted with someone with COVID.
If a double-jabbed person in England has been identified as a contact if someone who has contracted Covid, they must take a daily lateral flow test for seven days, starting from the 14th December.

“We want this to be a place for everyone to enjoy”- Langworthy community garden project breaks ground
Horsham St community garden has finally broken ground after months of waiting to secure funds for the project.
A group of neighbours from Langworthy have successfully secured funding to turn the land next to Salford Dental Practice into a community garden.
On Sunday the group welcomed locals to join them as they began work on the small piece of land.
The event gave community members the opportunity to meet neighbours, plant trees, and make Christmas wreaths.

Photography exhibition in Salford aims to “perfectly capture the pub culture surrounding a truly British tradition”
On Tuesday 14th December, Lower Kersal Social Club will display a range of art from a group of young photographers.
The exhibition, called “Pint Glass Perspectives”, aims to document the community feel and the atmosphere of the surrounding area of the club.
The exhibition is being hosted by a group of photography students and offers cheap drinks and a friendly atmosphere.
Lower Kersal Social Club is located on Stamford Road in Kersal, one of the hosts of the event, Daisy Roberts said “it’s a venue with a lot of history.”

“It is about raising the aspirations of residents across the city” – Salford City Council hosts skills and work panel
Salford City Council hosted an expert panel discussion to discuss the future of skills and work in the city this morning.
Leaders across business, education and the VCSE sector were invited to join the Teams call, which was chaired by Andy Westwood, and share their thoughts.
Paul Dennett, City Mayor, started the discussion: “We want to take advantage of opportunities but importantly reduce inequalities in the city. This is all about improving the skills and health and wellbeing of Salford residents.”
