United legend Nicky Butt says Manchester United are a ‘couple of big signings away from reaching the next level’.
The former United midfielder was speaking at an event based around improving the financial literacy of young people, for Salford City FC’s charity, Foundation 92.
MUFC equalled their best finish to a league campaign since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure this season, but Butt believes they are a couple of marquee transfers away from league success.
Rumours linking Jadon Sancho and Harry Kane to Manchester United this summer have already been circulating on social media.
Butt said: “Every year United fans and staff have to say this is the year, but it’ll take a couple of big signings to come in to help the squad reach that next level.”
Butt left his role as head of first-team development at the club in March but spoke highly of boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
He added: “I think he’s done a great job, he’s galvanized the players, got them all playing in the right direction.
“Obviously, they’re not challenging as of yet for the title although you never know what could happen but they’re moving forward.
“That’s all you can ask for as a football club, getting better and better, getting more points and reaching more semi-finals and finals and they’ve done that this year.”

The 46-year-old said: “Its important to help the local community and people that need it.
“Today’s all about being independently financially aware which is a good thing going forward.
“You don’t realise, until you come somewhere like this, that people don’t really know too much about finances.
“I was very fortunate in life with good parents and football coaches around me, but some people don’t have that so it’s important we give them that.”
