Salford women’s running group “We Run Salford” is celebrating seven years since its launch by getting back outdoors together after the past year of virtual activity.
The group was set up in May 2014 by Karen Ainsworth and Rachel Morris. Both were into running at the time and wanted to start running together so had the idea to invite others along also.
Rachel Morris, 27, said: “I had just had two babies at the time and was enjoying getting out of the house regularly to do something for myself and to feel good.
“We are a Lifecentre Salford project affiliated with Sport England. Myself and Karen are leaders in running fitness and have been trained by Sport England.”
Due to Covid lockdowns, the runners have not been able to meet, but they all kept in touch throughout on social media.
She said: “We are really happy to be meeting together again, and have been since we have been allowed to.”
The aim of the group is to empower, support and encourage any local women who want to run, walk or jog.
“Whether you feel unfit, or have been running for years, we enjoy running and it is free outdoors for anyone who wants it.”
“We run from Langworthy to Salford Quays and love to connect two very different communities. All are welcome and no one is ever left alone.”
But the first anniversary celebration was on water rather than dry land.
Rachel said: “Our seven-year celebrations have begun – a few of us were offered a free sailing session at Salford Watersports centre at the Quays.
“We will continue to celebrate over the next month, with social activities that all our members can enjoy, including a 7k run together.”
