Salford recyclers can apply for grants to encourage new initiatives.
A fund, which is available across Greater Manchester, aims to support projects organised by the community and voluntary sector.
Schemes that promote recycling, sustainability, preventing or reusing waste are all eligible for the fund.
Recycle for Greater Manchester is hoping the fund will inspire ‘innovative projects’ that take a new approach to reduce, reuse, recycle.
Organisations that can apply are registered charities, not-for-profit organisations, community, neighbourhood or voluntary groups, faith groups, schools, colleges, and universities.
Recycle for Greater Manchester said that the biggest problem in the county is recycling contamination – the wrong plastics or items, such as nappies, are often found in bins which can lead to a whole wagon full of recycling not being processed.
They advise that residents check the council website to see what can be recycled in each recycling bin before discarding their waste.
When tackling your personal waste, the group said that food waste has a big impact on your carbon footprint: “We encourage residents to reduce food waste by thinking about what they’re buying, using leftovers, storing food properly, and anything you do have to waste, such as your peelings and your leftovers, you can recycle in Salford. And it’s made into compost.”
Applications for the Recycle for Greater Manchester Community Fund are now open.
