On the 14th and 15th of December, The Training Academy are running a socially distanced paediatric first aid course in Swinton – the owner of the company, Mike O’Niell, has talked about the importance of CPR in our everyday lives.
Mike is an ex- firefighter, residing in Eccles, who decided to start his own business as he developed a passion for first aid.
He had been a nursing assistant and a trauma technician, as well as helping assist the North West Ambulance Service. This was all before using his experiences to help teach and educate others.
“We do general first aid and we are accredited to Qualsafe, a government body.”
“I’m very passionate about first aid, I’ve done CPR over 100 times, it’s a great resource for me to have some real accreditation.”
“If there is an incident, if staff are involved, I would come along free of charge and do a critical indecent debrief. I would facilitate what they talk about, I’m not a councillor but I can sign post and direct.”

“We make it enjoyable like a team event, we give them confidence, from the first to last moment of the course there is a huge difference in people. We use different scenarios to instill confidence in people.”
Mike also stated that training is also available for all ages : “Its for anybody, from the age of 14 or they can be 35, it’s informative before age 14. You get 15-16 year olds working, I think it’s the best thing you’ll ever learn.”
“The evaluation sheets we get back, we have people saying I wish I did this years ago.”
With Greater Manchester currently in a tier 3 lockdown, the course will follow social distancing guidelines and take the appropriate COVID measures.
“Depending on how many students I have, I will give them a facemask for each dummy and a lung. Everything is sterilized before and after each use. All dressing and bandages are new and all fake injuries are sterilised.”
