Sale Sharks Women have announced the signings of a further six new players ahead of their first season in the Tyrells Premier 15s.
With a team that already boasts some big internationals such as Katy Daley-Mclean and Jessica Wooden, the addition of Beth Stafford, Carys Hall, Scarlett Fielding, Freya Hellin, Alicia Calton and Georgie Perris-Redding will boost the squad’s quality and depth.
Beth Stafford, 26, can play as a number eight or second row and played against Wales for Barbarians Women last season. Stafford has represented Firwood Waterloo, RGC and Birkenhead Panthers in the past.
27-year-old Carys Hall, who has also represented Firwood Waterloo for numerous seasons, will be a great addition to the backline of Sale Sharks Women.
At the age of 19, Scarlett Fielding is the youngest out of the club’s latest signings, but her youth should not overlook her experience. An England U18s representative, the hooker also has Premier 15s experience with Firwood Waterloo.
Sale have landed the signature of another ex-Firwood player in Freya Hellin, a 20-year-old skillful back-row forward who can also be utilised as a hooker. Hellin will arguably be the most keen to hit the ground running after returning to union from injury.
Alicia Calton, another 20-year-old, is a gifted centre with a solid defensive game. Currently studying at Manchester Metropolitan University and progressing through Eccles Rugby Club, Calton is deemed to have great potential.
Georgie Perris-Redding brings with her some extra Tyrells Premier 15s experience having also played for Firwood Waterloo and Worcester Women. The 23-year-old will be joining from Sale 1861 Women, and is a familiar face with the Sharks as she also works for the Sharks Community Trust. Perris-Redding is hoping to secure a position in the back-row, but her versatility means she can play in a number of positions.
Speaking on the squad’s latest additions, Head of Women’s Rugby Darren Lamon said: “Finding and developing talent is a big part of building a successful squad. In Beth, Freya, Scarlett, Carys, Alicia and Georgie we have secured the signings of six very talented and promising rugby players who either all live, work and/or study in the North West.
“This is important to us as a club and will help shape our identity for the future to have a core of North West players. Each player has unique skillsets and a desire to improve which will enhance our squad for next season and beyond.
“We’re all looking forward to welcoming them to Sale Sharks and integrating them into our new playing squad when preseason gets underway.”
