An unusual exercise class in Worsley is giving people with bone conditions a new lease of life.
Bungee cord fitness is a new trend that has rapidly grown in popularity across the UK. The class involves the use of a bungee cord and a harness, which allows people to gain a high intensity workout without having too much impact on their joints.
Janine, 55, who suffers from osteoarthritis, has noticed a substantial change in her health after joining the fitness class earlier this year.
“After previously being a professional hockey player in my youth, not being able to do everyday activities really got me down.
“I couldn’t walk for more than 20 minutes without getting out of breathe, or my joints seizing up.
“I really thought that was it for me.”
After discovering the unconventional class online, Janine’s physical health has greatly improved:
“My breathing capacity has more than doubled, and now I can run a mile without being out of breathe.
“I no longer need to use a stick, and I can work up to 5 hours in the garden, where I only used to be able to work for 10 minutes.
“Although I’m not at the same level as I used to be, it has really changed my life for the better.”
Tony McAleavy, instructor of the bungee cord fitness class in Worsley, praises the class as being a ground-breaking discovery that is fit for all shapes and sizes:
“We have so many different types of people who come in to our studio, all with a different reason behind why they are joining.
“The class is mostly designed for people who may have ailments or injuries that may hold them back from doing normal exercise classes.
“We help build their energy levels by doing a HIIT workout, but because some bodies can’t take certain levels of intensity, the suspension from the bungee cord reduces the pressure on their muscles and their joints.”
With his class at Pole Sessions achieving results that defy the laws of physics, Tony hopes that the studio can be recognised as an official referral unit for people with injuries:
“We have had so many people who have come in and not been able to walk, and then 3 months later, they are able to perform handstands up a wall.
“The results speak for themselves, and I really do hope that in the future our class can be a go-to GP referral so that we can help change more people’s lives.”
Bungee Cord Fitness Classes are held at Pole Sessions, on Tuesday 11am-11:45am, and on Wednesday 7:30pm – 8:15pm.
