Salford City F.C have a different type of challenge next Tuesday night as they face Wolves’ U-21s at the Peninsula Stadium in the Leasing.com Trophy.
They will be looking to put their disappointment of being knocked out of the FA Cup behind them and continue the impressive form they showed in the group stages of the tournament.
Their league form has also dropped in recent weeks, losing to top of the league Swindon Town followed by an underwhelming 0-0 draw at home to Macclesfield Town.
Salford have had a rare break at the weekend ahead of this tie, giving Graham Alexandra’s men precious time to prepare for this knock-out fixture and with no replay, penalties are a possibility.
Wolves U-21s were competitive in a group with strong football league sides, excelling in a rare opportunity to play senior teams and finishing second in the group just a point behind Blackpool.
However, losing to Blackpool in their final group game was a setback from Wolves U-21s as they missed the chance to top the group.
Salford are in the northern side of the draw and so a win against Wolves U-21s could see them face local foes like Bolton or Accrington or even Manchester United U21s in the third round.
Graham Alexander has used the tournament as an opportunity to experiment and give valuable playing time to young players and he is expected to do so again on Tuesday with the league remaining Salford’s top priority in their first season in the Football League.
