Salford Hospital

Salford Royal Hospital has launched a new Race Equality Change Agents Programme (RECAP) to improve workplace culture within hospitals in Greater Manchester.

The programme which came into effect today aims to implement the work delivered as part of the NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard Experts Programme at a local level.

The programme aims to benefit all partner organisations within the borough of Greater Manchester.

Naheed Nazir, who has been working on equality for more than 20 years, said: “Race equality has been a subject that’s always been very taboo and people don’t really talk about it.

“However, when people talk about it, there’s a lot of connotations that’s attached to it – and it’s always talked about in a negative light.”

She added: “We want to bring it to the forefront and make it comfortable for people to talk about racial inequality whilst raising people’s awareness.”

RECAP also includes five places reserved for the Third Sector Organisations working towards improving health outcomes within Salford and other areas of Greater Manchester.

In addition to this, it brings together leading academics and inclusion professionals from across the UK.

The overall programme lasts 12 months. In the first six months, different modules cover topics such as what racial inequality is and how it impacts people’s lives and lived experiences.

For the second half, the staff take part in a project which includes coaching and mentoring within the workplace.

This will take place across Greater Manchester and includes other hospitals, local authorities such as the police, fire services, hospices and education schemes in local schools.
