The Salford based charity, Langworthy Cornerstone, are providing free lunches for hungry children over the summer holidays.
The community centre will aim to help those children who go hungry with a lack of school meals over the summer holidays.
The scheme was already extremely successful in the area, and they now hope that they will be able to reach more families following a Healthy Holidays Project funding award by NHS Salford CCG with support from Salford CVS.
Langworthy Cornerstone is a community centre based on the corner of Liverpool Street and Langworthy Road in Salford, with the aim of “Working to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Salford and especially those of Seedley & Langworthy”.
John Phillips, Chief Officer of Langworthy Cornerstone explained how helpful the scheme is to families in the area who struggle over the long summer break.
“Our Chimney Pot cafe is part of the Fareshare network and this helps us to provide healthy, home- cooked food for the local community at really reasonable prices.
“However, the issue of holiday hunger is really prevalent in the local area. If we can go some way to tackling that by offering free meals for kids in the school holidays we can take some of the pressure off local families”
Clare Hardy is the cafe manager at the Cornerstone.
“over the Easter holidays we served 81 children and 54 parents/carers over a three week period, so we are delighted to be helping local families”.
The free meals will be served over the coming summer holidays from Monday 29th July until Friday 30th August. Food will be served from Monday to Friday 12noon-1.30pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult, who will also be able to enjoy a free bowl of the chosen soup of the day and a roll.
This project will encourage access to all of the other services and health and wellbeing activities available at the centre.
