Salford City FC aim to get back to winning ways against Gateshead in the FA Trophy First Round this weekend. Salford FC’s unbeaten run ended last weekend with a 2-0 defeat away to Chesterfield.
The Ammies will be making history this weekend as they have never reached this stage of the competition before, having been knocked out in either the Preliminary Round or the Qualifying Round.
Graham Alexander’s side had previously gone 20 games without losing.
Their form in this competition has been getting progressively better, having gone out in the Third Qualifying Rounds in the last two seasons.
Gateshead equaled their best performance in this competition by getting to the Semi Finals of last year’s FA Trophy.
Salford City have only advanced beyond the stage they entered three times in the last decade.
The closest Salford came to reaching the First Round happened in 2009/10 when they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Kings Lynn.
Both sides go into this game without injuries or suspensions, which will be much relief to Graham Alexander going into a busy festive period and Salford hoping to retain top spot from Leyton Orient in that time.
Salford have already faced Gateshead away this season in August when Luke Armstrong’s brace cancelled out Adam Rooney’s opener to claim an important 2-1 for The Tynesiders.
Salford come into this game with mixed form, having won just two of their previous five in all competitions.
Gateshead have had similarly mixed results, but come into this game after a 2-0 home win against Bromley. It’s a tough game, but a big performance is needed by Salford if they are to continue to make history in the FA Trophy.
