After the success of the Salford City FC’s men’s team, who were recently promoted as champions to the National League, the club announced the arrival of the Salford City Lionesses.
Revealed on Twitter, Class of 92 joint owner Gary Neville, said: “There’s an opportunity for people to come down and get involved, and we want it to be something that increases participation of women in sport, women in Salford, and also from our point of view as a football club, we want to be competitive.”
Neville went on to explain that it was always in their plans to set up a women’s side, and after four very successful years of ownership, now was the right time to do that.

Ryan Giggs, another Class of 92 member to joint own Salford City FC, also spoke after the news: “The team will impact the local area massively, it gives a chance to young women to aspire to be part of a team, it gives them a chance to work within a team, but also as an individual; a great way to keep fit.”
30% of women in Salford are inactive, with the development of the Salford City Lionesses, the Class of 92 owners are hoping to make a positive impact on this statistic.
The Salford City Lionesses will be sponsored by Professional People Group whose Director Daniel Mortell said:
“It’s an exciting time for the club and we are all looking forward to supporting the Lionesses to glory!”
The announcement by Salford City comes just weeks after Manchester United FC also announced that they will be creating a women’s team.
It’s an exciting time for women’s football as 45,423 attended the 2018 SSE Women’s FA Cup Final, a new record for women’s football at Wembley Stadium.
WSL (Women’s Super League) viewing figures have doubled over recent years and the FA (Football Association) set out a campaign named ‘The Gameplan for Growth’ over a year ago with the aim to double participation in the sport by 2020.
