HOSTED at the HOME art gallery, as part of the Manchester Animation Festival, Mackinnon & Saunders: Origins is here to impress.
The Manchester Animation Festival is the UK’s largest animation festival dedicated to celebrate the animated art form.The festival brings one of UK’s biggest animation hubs together and invites the international community to be delighted in all things animated.
The festival unites artists, practitioners, students, enthusiasts and all those in between to enjoy the many and varied creations of the animated form.
Part of the festival, the creations of Mackinnon and Saunders are on display for the delight of the public.
Mackinnon & Saunders: Origins take a look behind the scenes of the workshops of the Altrincham-based puppet makers that have been bringing some of animation’s most favourite characters to life.
The two puppet makers, Ian Mackinnon and Peter Saunders, started their journey into the world of puppet making at Manchester’s Cosgrove Hall in the 1980’s and established their own company in the early 1990’s. The pair has created an amazing range of characters since then.
The duo has crafted many of the puppets from popular children’s TV shows, including Bob the Builder, Postman Pat, The Twirlywoos and The Clangers.

Mackinnon & Saunders have collaborated with Tim Burton on Mars Attacks! , Frankenweenie and Corpse Bride, and with Wes Anderson on Fantastic Mr. Fox.
Art and engineering work together to create palpable worlds and characters when it comes to stop motion animation. The creation of practical, aesthetically pleasing puppets, props and costumes requires a team effort. It is a complex process that brings together manufacturing, manual dexterity, digital technology, traditional craft skills and aspects of design.
The exhibition features imagery from some of the studio’s most memorable projects and it explores the layers of workshop developments that turn dreams into reality. It celebrates the work of Mackinnon & Saunders, from children’s favourite and epic fantasies to spine-tingling horror and incredible adventures.
If you like animation, or just want to see something unique, the exhibition is available until the 7th of January 2018 at the HOME art gallery in Manchester.
