SCOTT Teirney, from Rochdale, has swam a staggering 164 miles (10,528 lengths) in just 12 weeks, in order to raise money for the charity Save Samantha.
The charity was set up to raise money for local mother-of-two Samantha Smith (31) to travel to America for life changing treatment. Samantha needs neurosurgery due to severe damage to her brain and spinal cord.
Scott set out 12 weeks ago to raise money for the charity, aiming to swim 100 miles in his local swimming baths. Instead, Scott has exceeded his own expectations, and amazingly swam over 150 miles in his target time.
Over 5000 people nationwide have participated in the Aspire channel swim, with Scott choosing to swim for the Save Samantha charity. he currently sits in a remarkable 5th place in the UK.
It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for him though. Scott has had to juggle his swimming with a full time job, and looking after his daughter, but he says the amazing support he has received has helped him through it.
Working as a specialist welder during the day for HF Mixing Group in Rochdale, Scott’s colleagues have supported him every step of the way, even offering to double their donations if he reached the 150 mile mark.
Scott has had to compete with the swimming pools very busy schedule, having to work his swims around a number of different classes, and clubs that restrict his pool time. Despite this, he expressed his gratitude for all of the staff at Oulder Hill Leisure Complex in Rochdale.
I spoke to Scott about his reasons for doing the Swim and about his overall experience.
Although he admitted he has had “no life” since starting the challenge, he said knowing how amazing the cause is has pushed him through. People can donate to the charity via website. Scott will be finishing his challenge later this week and we will have an update coming soon exclusively for Quays News.
