RUN by The University of Salford’s own students, It’s a Laugh! hopes to put the idea that laughter is the best medicine to the test.
Hosted at the Old Pint Pot pub in Salford, the team is aiming to raise money for C.A.L.M. or the Campaign Against Living Miserably.
The evening consists of live comedy and music by local performers, in what the managing team are describing as “a light hearted approach to a serious issue.”
“With the fact that this is for the Campaign Against Living Miserably, we thought [well] what’s better than to make people laugh!” Says Emma-Jane Brazier, part of the team behind It’s a Laugh! “It’s quite frightening the statistics that are out there, regarding male suicide. CALM are actively trying to break down the male gender stereotypes regarding talking about male mental health.”
The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. In 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male.
“You know, we’re brought up in a world where women are seen to be ok to talk about their emotions, but men are supposed to keep it to themselves.” Says Brazier. “That ideology isn’t fit for purpose anymore.”
Tickets are available here, and more information can be found on the event’s Facebook and Twitter.
