EXTRACTING DNA from River basins in Brazil used to be a costly and time consuming process. However that is about to change thanks to University of Salford PHD student Naiara Sales. She has pioneered through new Environmental DNA, which is DNA that has been collected from soil sea water and air.
“I hope to establish a new method of bio diversity assessment of fish species in Brazilian rivers”
This new way of collecting Envdna is not harmful to the environment as it uses non invasive procedures to collect the DNA. As well as this Edna does not disturb the habitat of vunrable species as other methoods in the past have done. Naiara’s research has found that Envdna is significantly less costly than previous methods and after a talk in South Africa, as well as more accurate. Naiara hopes that her work can be seen by more people.
