REVIEW: Wonder Woman

THE HYPE behind Wonder Woman has been huge in the run-up to its release and it’s not always that a film lives up to that hype. Wonder Woman does.

The superhero movie genre is becoming so excessive that by the end of this year, we will have seen the release of six huge budget superhero films (seven if you count The LEGO Batman Movie) and that’s without getting started on what’s in store in 2018. With the amount of these films these days, it takes a special one to stand out…here we have one of the special ones.

Wonder Woman is not only easily the most important superhero films we have ever seen in terms of themes and the overall message, but is certainly one of the more entertaining and re-watchable of the genre.

Re-watchability is a huge factor when it comes to figuring out an opinion on movies like this. Blockbusters are meant to be enjoyed again and again and again and I feel like I could watch Wonder Woman every single week and love it all the same.

This is not a perfect movie. There are very few ‘perfect’ movies. That has to be made clear; but what Wonder Woman is, is exactly what the world needs, exactly what comic book movie fans need and arguably most significantly, exactly what Warner Bros. and the DCEU needs.

Following the mixed receptions of the three other films in the universe: Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016), the fact that Wonder Woman has brought everyone together in celebration of this truly great movie will be making the heads at that studio sigh a BIG sigh of relief.

Acclaimed director Patty Jenkins knew exactly what she wanted to with Wonder Woman and she completely delivered. A thoughtful, inspiring, deep story. Stunning visuals. Action scenes that stand out above those many other comic book films. Most importantly though is the optimism within the film and the message that love is the only thing that can achieve peace.

In such times that we’re living in in the real world, these messages need to be shouted loud and clear.

In terms of performances, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana, Princess of Themyscira is outstanding. For an actress many people had concerns about leading up to the film. She brings depth, humour, power, honour and most importantly, general ‘badass-ery’ to the role.

She has now fallen into that elite group of comic book movie actors along with the likes of Hugh Jackman and Robert Downey Jr. who simply ARE the characters they play.

Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, an American working for British intelligence in World War One, also gives a surprisingly great performance.

Robin Wright who plays Antiope, a general on Themyscira and Diana’s trainer has a big impact on the overall story in the relatively short time she’s in the film. As does Connie Nielsen playing Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta.

David Thewlis, best known for playing Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films is yet another actor that brings the goods to Wonder Woman.

There is one particular scene that takes place in No Man’s Land during the first World War, the setting for the majority of Wonder Woman, that I believe will go down as one of the greats in the genre.

What left is there to say!? Wonder Woman is entirely entertaining, often funny, surprisingly powerful and Gal Gadot will instantly become everyone’s favourite human being. Even on the rare occasion the film slows down in pace, there’s still plenty to love. It’s difficult to see anyone being disappointed by this one.
