QUAYS managed to see three acts hip hop promotions company Tru Luv’s stage; rapper crossed crooner Tobi Sunomla, the diminutive IAMDDB and the ferocious Sleazy F Baby.

Tobi Sunnola (8) took to an almost empty stage at 4:30 in the afternoon, but the rappers’ gravelly singing voice and well-delivered, personal bars quickly drew a sizable crowd to the tent. Watching Tobi’s performance was an infectiously exciting experience; his pleasure at being onstage evident yet that didn’t stop him hitting every note. His music is an exciting mix of groovy RnB and hip hop; his beats create a soundscape reminiscent of Anderson Paak at his most rock’n’roll. Set highlight “Run Free” inspired an easy singalong – this is the sort of music Rag N Bone Man wishes he could make.

Next up was Manchester darling IAMDDB (7) who, despite some technical difficulties, played a fantastic set to a crowd that included collaborators and long-time fans. Her tiny presence and oversized shirt don’t scream ‘massive popstar’ but as soon as she begins talking, her humble stage presence, impeccable flow and silk smooth voice get the crowd swaying to trakcs from WAVEYBABY VOLUME 1 along with some early tunes and new loosies. These included some live premiers, such as “Pxyyscat” which saw DD flexing over a strong synthy beat produced by Audioklique.

The last act of Quays’ day was Sleazy F Baby (8), at the criminally early time of 7:45 in the afternoon. Sleazy and co, including Manchester hip hop crew member Black Josh, don’t hold back considering the early time. Sleazy turns up dressed in a fur jacket and bursts straight into action. The energy on stage is impeccable and brings the tunes from last years’ debut full length All Blahk Tracksuit to life in a way that lifts them above the recorded versions. It gets the packed crowed jumping and rapping along throughout the set, peaking during fan favourites “Blahk Tracksuit” and new tune “Let It Go,” which sees gun fingers raised throughout the tent.

The stage was one of the highlighs of Sounds From The Other City, with a diverse range of brand new hip hop and rnb talent that, at times, transcended genre boundaries as only the most truly breathtaking music can.
