Manchester’s redevelopment and regeneration led the way at an international property convention, MIPIM, on Tuesday.
An audience crammed into the Grand Auditorium at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes to hear about the city’s success and how it plans to stimulate development in the challenging times ahead.
Sir Howard Bernstein, CEO of Manchester City Council and speaker on the MIPIM panel, said: “Manchester has had a very long, and proud history with MIPIM.
“It is more important than ever that Manchester remains outward facing, and embraces the world. We want to communicate a very powerful message about Manchester, it is a fantastic place to live, work and invest.
“People can work with us in the knowledge that their problems are our problems.”
Marty Edelman, another speaker on the panel and executive chairman of the Manchester Life Development Company said he was ‘blown away’ with how the public and private sectors had regenerated the city.
The success of Manchester Life, a joint venture between Manchester Council and the Abu Dhabi United Group, has produced the £1bn redevelopment of Ancoats, New Islington and east Manchester.
The Manchester Life is said to have put Manchester at the vanguard of regeneration and development, enabling neighbourhoods to regenerate and thrive.
Sir Howard Lister, the chairman of the Homes and Communities Agency, also praised the city’s leaders and claimed Manchester had become the ‘poster child’ for redevelopment.
He said: “It’s all about leadership at the end of the day. If you know that the people in charge are serious, will take political risk, make difficult decisions, are not scared to say no and then will follow through with schemes, then your level of confidence is much higher.
“In many parts of the country you hear developers say, ‘it is difficult to get planning’, but you won’t hear that in Manchester.”
The panel also discussed a potential underground travel system which could take shape in the next ten years to support the city’s expanding population.
