THE TONY award winning play, The Pillowman written by Martin McDonagh is heading to Salford Arts Theatre in May and the directors are saying it’ll certainly be “a dark but moving experience” for audiences.
McDonagh’s 2003 production tells the sinister tale of Katurian, a fiction writer of gruesome stories, whose passion for his writing leads to him being arrested by two detectives as they unravel the truth about local child murders.
Director, Hayley Graham said: “The play is definitely heart-breaking, spine-tingling with so many twists and special moments.
“We’re working hard to depict the right amount of sincerity to such upsetting subjects, but not to overshadow the intricate writing by McDonagh on each of the characters whom all have their own interesting pasts to share.”
The original play achieved great success and went on to showcase around the world following the original premiere in London with David Tennant and Jim Broadbent as the protagonists.
Iain Snell, who is not only directing the play but is also a Salford University student added: “It’ll be great to bring the show local and share the haunting tale with the people of Salford,
“Rehearsals have been going so well and I can’t wait for audiences to finally come and see the work we’ve been doing. We’re all so proud.”
The play is based around the Grimm brother’s twisted fairy tales after McDonagh claimed he would love to write something as “horrific”.
The production runs from 25th May until 27th May, and tickets will be on sale in April via the Salford University ticket page, priced £8 for adults and £6 for concessions.
