THE Wood Street Mission’s Christmas community shop opened in Manchester this week.

The shop will be open for the next three weeks and will provide low income families of Greater Manchester with Christmas presents.

This is a new project for the charity, which has been providing “help and respect for those that don’t have a lot” since 1869.

Roseanne Sweeney, Chief Executive of Wood Street Mission, said: “We’ve been helping families at Christmas time for a very long time, since the eighteen seventies in fact.

“But we’ve changed the way we’ve done things this year, so rather than allocating families who need help at Christmas time toys and food, we’re allowing them to come into our shop; giving them virtual credit so they can buy the toys and the food that are suitable for their own families.”

Families are allocated points based on number of children and can redeem them on a range of gifts and toys for children up to the age of 18. You can find anything from books to board games to selection boxes.

The shop is located on Wood Street in Manchester City centre and is open from 9am-4:30pm Monday- Friday until Friday 22nd December.
