Justin Bieber bought over 100 of them; but just how good are Northern Soul’s Grilled Cheese?
Northern Soul – a gourmet grilled cheese restaurant based in Manchester’s Northern Quarter – found new found fame after Justin Bieber and his crew put in an immense order to the humble shack, following the first his Manchester performances last Thursday night.
This A-lister was not even ‘Sorry’, with his mammoth request of over 100 grilled sandwiches, which he put in moments before the restaurant was supposed to close.
@NorthernSoulMcr what did @justinbieber order? Coming today and looking for lunchtime inspiration!

So just how good is this sandwich?
The recommend crowd pleaser is the “Pig on a Lead”, a grilled cheese sandwich filled with BBQ pulled pork, and stacked further with macaroni cheese.
For those with a big appetite, on first glance this sandwich is slightly disheartening: even though the dish looked vibrant, succulent and appetising, for £6.50 it felt as though there was something missing, as though there should have been a side of some sort to make this a more satisfactory meal. However, do not be deceived – this modest sandwich packs much more than it lets on.
This seemingly simple sandwich is loaded to the brim with luscious meat and pasta, so much so, that it is a desperate feat just to finish it off.
When you sit down, you get the chance to sit at the bar and watch the chefs grill your sandwich to a scrumptious crisp, which is absolutely addictive once you’ve had your first bite.
After the delicious crunch, the smooth saucy textures of the homemade macaroni cheese and BBQ pulled pork melded into each other in mouthwatering harmony. The pork carries a full-bodied juicy meat flavour, complimented by the macaroni, which bulks out the already loaded sandwich so each mouthful carries deep savoury impact.
Along with good food, Northern Soul also delivers great engaging atmosphere. The staff were attentive, friendly and conversational. Even though the restaurant was rammed with customers, there was still a relaxed and soothed ambience. Staff played out Northern Soul tracks like Marvin Gaye ‘Sexual Healing’, making this quirky little hangout suit it’s Northern Quarter home.
It goes without saying, this memorable zany eatery is a must visit for flavourful, gourmet improvements on the basic toasted sandwich: ‘Never Say Never’ to a Northern Soul Grilled Cheese!
