A PARK in Greater Manchester will bid to host the Ryder Cup after plans to create a new championship golf course in Bolton have been disclosed.
Hulton Park, Bolton, boasting over 1,000 acres of green space, will then be transformed into a par 72 course, which will allow the estate to host major tournaments as the Ryder Cup championship of 2026.
Peel Land and Property, which bought the estate in 2010, say their multi-million pound investment will also see the creation of a 18-hole golf resort, a clubhouse, a golf training academy, a new hotel and spa.
The estate lies on old mining sites in Westhoughton on the border of Wigan where an underground explosion in 1910 killed over 300 men.
It then hosted the historic Hulton Hall but soon fell into neglect and decline suffering vandalism in the 1950s.
The new plans intend to restore the gardens of the estate and the old Hulton Hall.
Peel bosses spoke to the M.E.N. and said the project will bring “significant local benefits to Bolton and Greater Manchester.”
Councillor Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton council, also spoke to the M.E.N. and said: “The plans also present a fantastic opportunity to discuss possible solutions to some of the challenges facing surrounding communities that we are keen to explore, largely around infrastructure. I believe that it would firmly place Bolton on the map as a destination for sporting excellence.”
