‘INDIE-pop’ band Fickle Friends hit the stage at Manchester’s Sound Control last night as part of their headline tour. Quays News entertainment reporter Rachel Foy went along…

It was the second time Fickle Friends had visited the venue, and the whole band it seems, were genuinely surprised at how many people came to see them perform, which came across as pleasantly modest and gave them an air of a ‘band of the people’.

Supported by Merseyside quartet ‘Clean Cut Kid’, who had previously headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds festival, the crowd were suitable warmed up for an evening of live music.

Fickle Friends’ set is balanced between old fan favourites and a selection of new songs that more than holds their own, a great sign for the future development of the band. Through two years of hard touring the five-piece have been gathering steam including sets at major festivals such as Bestival, BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend and Secret Garden Party.

Naturally their breakthrough single ‘Swim’ got a great ovation and caused the loudest sing-along of the night, but the set highlight had to be the performance of their most recent single ‘Say No More’.

When the instruments fall silent, lead singer Natassja Shiner does a brief acoustic spot and the power of her vocals are brought to light. With angelic tones she is able to bring sweet music to the audience’s ears. Natti also acknowledged her fashion flop as she wore a robust, black jumper that meant she’d sweat much when she danced on stage.

The intimate venue provides a perfect environment for their positive sound; 80s style synths and rhythms bounced around the room with the energy of the band, it was near impossible to not pick up on that positive energy.

The band definitely brought a spot of sunshine to a very cold February night.
